World Series Sprintcars to return to Tasmania
Tasmanian speedway fans are rejoicing with the news that the highly popular Chickenfeed World Series Sprintcar championship will return to the State this season.
Tasmania was left off the World Series calendar last year despite fans supporting the event in their tens of thousands in previous years.
However, local promoters and sponsors have worked hard during the off-season to secure the return of the series in the upcoming 2010-2011 season.
Tasmania will host two rounds of the 16-round series later this year, with Hobart's Mountain Dew Ice Raceway being the venue for round three of the series on December 4 and the Bendigo Bank Arena at Latrobe hosting the fourth round the following Saturday night, on December 11.
Once again the series has attracted some of the best drivers in the world, including spectacular American drivers Jason Johnson (pictured right) and flamboyant Californian Tyler Walker.
The list of 15 contracted drivers also includes former Australian champions and World Series winners Max Dumesny, Brooke Tatnell and Robbie Farr, who will be joined by Tasmania's best drivers for the two rounds at Hobart and Latrobe, providing a field of up to 45 cars in what promises to be two nights of electrifying racing, including live action replays on a giant television screen.
Former multiple Tasmanian champion David Murcott, originally from Devonport and now based in Melbourne, will also be returning to his home State as he once again chases a top five World Series finish.
World Series Sprintcars general manager Steve Green said the series was thrilled to be returning to Tasmania.
"Tasmania is a very important part of our series and the Tasmanian fans have loyally supported the series over the past four or five years," Mr Green said.
"Speedway racing right across Tasmania has a strong following, in particular sprintcar racing, and there are some very talented locals who will give our contracted drivers a good run for their money, so we should be in for two exceptional rounds in Tassie," he said.
Chickenfeed State Manager Ricky Wells said the company was excited about the return of World Series Sprintcars to Tasmania.
"We have been on board from the very first time the series came to Tasmania and were disappointed when Tassie wasn't included last season," Mr Wells said.
"However, we have continued to support sprintcar racing at the highest level in Tasmania and helped bring the best available drivers to Tasmania for last year's Chickenfeed Tasmania v USA Test Series," he said.
"The return of the Chickenfeed World Series Sprintcar Championship to Hobart and Latrobe in December will be the highlight of a spectacular season ahead for 2010-2011."
